An Addict Episode 4: A new stepdad & best friend steers

After my parents divorced, my mom, my sister, and I lived in a farm house on a farm owned by my grandparents. I loved the life I had growing up there and it seemed like I could always find something to do there to keep me busy outdoors. There were kittens being born in the hayloft all spring and most of summer. My sister had a pony on the farm that she took care of. The three of us attended to Sugarplum, a sweet baby calf that we bottle fed formula, as his mom either wasn’t around or wasn’t able to feed him. My mom took care of maybe a dozen cows and a number of pigs too during our stay there. The pasture and hayloft, were just a couple of places for my imagination to run wild. There were woods nearby to adventure in, and a pond for fishing. I am so grateful to my grandparents on my mom’s side for that opportunity to grow up in a barn, fostering a love of nature at a young age. Their way of life gave me the most amazing childhood beginnings! That was a statement true of both my parents actually, as my dad was similar in his love of the outdoors. He had a farm as well, just on a much smaller scale, but I’ll come back to him later in the story. My mom worked hard during this time, more than I realized or understood back then. I remember her waking up before the sun came up, to feed the cows and pigs and then…
